Seventh year in a row for our family summer holidays to Sardinia Island .This year we chose september and we found a wonderful season, not too crowded places, warm but mild sunny weather and a new place on the north edge of the beautiful island.

Like last year, being mostly a family vacation, I decided to bring only a minimal gear, APRS tracker and my VX-5 to do some RXing and FM traffic.  Anyway seeing that one weekend there was the IARU reg.1 - 144Mhz contest i took my FT-100 and a HB9CV (borrowed from IZ5FKK... Thanks!) antenna to do some activity during the test.

I did some APRS network monitoring too, and it was interesting to see how it is useful to find the level of tropo propagation over the sea. I left my portable PC monitoring on 144.800Mhz  and under good tropo ducting over the mediterranean i could access DiGIs on the mainland at 200-300Km away with only 5W and the HB9CV.

 

About the contest I was QRV about four hours the 3rd of september from a hill nearby my QTH of Santa Teresa di Gallura, (abt 150mts high in front of the sea) and I was surprised for the good propagation that allowed  to work many DX over 500Km with my simple gear.
